Assistant
Scoutmaster
- I grew up as a Boy
Scout with Troop 12 in
Des Plaines
IL
, achieving the rank of Life Scout. Scouting was an important
part of my life growing up in the
Chicago
area and I wanted my son Alex to have the same experience. We
moved to Mountville from
Chicago
in 1999, I was a Den leader with Pack 159 for 4 years before
joining Troop 349 and becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster. In
addition to being an assistant Scoutmaster I am the Troop Eagle
Advisor working with older boys as they advance toward the rank
of Eagle. I also serve the PA Dutch Council on the Risk
Management Committee and as a Unit Commissioner for the Harvest
District. When I’m not hiking or camping with the boys I enjoy
fishing, hunting, snow skiing and singing in the church choir
and I am a member of the local Rotary Club. My wife Kitty serves
the troop as the advancement chair and on various other troop
committees and has made it perfectly clear she has no interest
in going camping. |

The Scoutmaster is the adult
responsible for the image and program of the troop. The
Scoutmaster and his Assistant Scoutmasters work directly with

in the fact that the quality of his guidance will affect every
youth and adult involved in the troop.
The Scoutmaster can be male or
female, but must be at least 21 years old. The Scoutmaster is
appointed by the head of the chartered organization.

the chartered organization and the Boy Scouts of America.
Assistant Scoutmaster
To fulfill his obligation to
the troop, the Scoutmaster, with the assistance of the troop
committee, recruits assistant Scoutmasters to help operate the
troop. Each assistant Scoutmaster is assigned specific program
duties and reports to the Scoutmaster. They also provide the
required two-deep leadership standards set by the Boy Scouts of
America. An assistant Scoutmaster may be 18 years old, but at
least one in each troop should be 21 or older, so he can serve
in the Scoutmaster's absence.
Types of assistant
Scoutmasters include:

A troop should recruit as many
assistant Scoutmasters as possible. it has been found that many
successful troop have three or more.
